New York
New York is a stunning destination whenever you decide to visit and is perfect for a spot of Christmas or January Sale shopping. But with winter temperatures hovering around 4C and regular snow flurries, you might want to plan your trip carefully.
Luckily there are both plenty of attractions that you can enjoy indoors and plenty of warming activities outside if you fancy a breath of fresh air. Here are some of our favourite ways to keep warm in New York:
1. New York is bursting with world renowned entertainment venues. Not only could you catch a show on Broadway but you could also enjoy a behind-the-scenes tour at one of New York’s many entertainment venues including Carnegie Hall, NBC Studios and Madison Square Garden.
2. A trip to the top of the Empire State Building is a must for any first-time visitor. Avoid queuing in the cold by buying your tickets online and then make your way to the 86th floor for unrivalled views across the city. Wrap up warm to enjoy the views from the open-air promenade or simply enjoy the panorama from inside the (heated) glass enclosed pavilion. You can also enjoy more views of New York from the warmth of your seat in the New York SKYRIDE - a simulated helicopter ride over the city.
3. Warm yourself up in the Tropical Butterfly Conservatory at the American Museum of Natural History. Or journey to the stars at the Hayden Planetarium - a spectacular new show about the wonders of space narrated by Whoopi Goldberg. Other museums which may be of interest include the Guggenheim, the Museum of Modern Art, the National Museum of the American Indian and the New York City Police Museum where you'll find historic police cars, vintage weapons, notorious criminals and even an authentic jail cell!
4. Grab a seat in one of New York's famous delis and warm yourself up with a hot cup of coffee. Enjoy a hot dog or pastrami sandwich at one of New York's best known and oldest delis - Katz's. Or, for breakfast pastries and delicious hot chocolate the City Bakery is hard to beat.
5. Ice skating is a popular pastime during the winter months in New York with rinks in Central Park, outside the Rockefeller Center and on the Pond at Bryant Park
6. Or escape the cold in one of the many large department stores and boutiques around the city - any excuse for a spot of shopping! From the giants of Macy's and Bloomingdales to smaller finds such as Darling (Horatio Street) and Flying A (Spring Street) - you're bound to find something to your taste. And for the kids, a trip to FAO Schwartz (on 5th Avenue) or ToysRUs (Times Square) are essential!
7. Belleayre Mountain is in the heart of the Catskills Mountains and is a popular ski destination with New Yorkers. The mountain offers fantastic skiing for all abilities with 47 trails, a terrain park and 8 lifts. Lessons are available from children's tuition to private clinics and there are day-care facilities on site too.
